CHAPTER SEVEN. THE EXTREME VULNERABILITY OF THE BABIES.

The babies that Lucy Letby was accused of killing were very ill, and very vulnerable. It is hardly surprising that they collapsed or died. Here are some quotes that substantiate this view.

Lucy Letby: killer or coincidence? Why some experts question the evidence

Hall, the expert for the defence, said that in his view the prosecution witnesses “exaggerated how well arguably all the babies who sadly died were”, a point denied by Evans.

Here are some quotes from Private Eye Special Report. The Lessons of The Lucy Letby Case, by Doctor Phil Hammond. MD. (available online.)

Private Eye Report, part 3:- Neonatal expert Professor Mike Hall stated his opinion that the babies were sicker than the prosecution portrayed them.

Private Eye Report, part 1:- In the year 2015, the unit treated babies with (on average) lower birth weights, and more complex medical needs. Some of these babies weighed less than three pounds, being very premature births. Neonatal expert Professor Mike Hall stated his opinion that the prosecution expert witness misrepresented the degree of wellness of these babies. On this basis, the deaths would not be unexpected or unexplained.

Private Eye Report, part 1:- Baby C was born at 30 weeks (it should be 36 weeks), and weighed less than two pounds. There was a lack of blood flow in the womb. In five of the babies, post-mortems certified “natural” causes of death.

The following quotes are from the book Lucy is Innocent, by Paul Bamford, SECOND EDITION, ISBN number 9798326484130 (I strongly recommend this book.)

Pages 43 to 47:- Baby A was premature 31 weeks.

Pages 56 to 58:- Baby D had been severely damaged at birth.

Pages 111 to 118:- Baby G. The doctors thought this baby’s chances of survival were slim.

Pages 160 to 165:- Baby I. Neonatology expert Professor Kendrick stated “lots of reasons for collapses”.

Page 348:- Baby I had a chronic bowel condition.

Pages 326 to 345:-   Babies O and P. Neonatology expert Professor Kendrick states “overwhelming infection written all over them”.

The following quote is from the article in The New Yorker (issue for May 20th, 2024) by Rachel Aviv, entitled – A Reporter at Large – Conviction, page 36:- Baby A had “crossed pulmonary arteries”.

My comment:- Most babies, when they are born, do not end up in a hospital ward. The very fact that these babies were in the unit in the first place suggests that they were ill. The unit had recently started taking on babies of greater vulnerability. However, the unit was not properly set up to deal with babies that were so vulnerable. The hospital management had made a serious error of judgement in taking on these very vulnerable babies. Hence the deaths and collapses. There is no question of a serial killer stalking the wards. The idea is ridiculous. Lucy Letby was a convenient “scapegoat” to absolve the hospital and the consultants of blame.
